The Other Big Game on G-Day

News

ATHENS, Ga. — You might’ve seen the big game this weekend — “93K Day,” they called it — but, in downtown Athens, there was another big game going on.

Well, not a game. It’s called a “bout.”

The Classic City Rollergirls roller derby team beat the Tragic City Rollers 226 – 54. But, Elizabeth Impaler — real name Vanessa Zerpa — said it’s not all about the score.

“What I like most about it is that it encompasses all walks of life,” Impaler said. “We have microbiologists on the team, we have teachers, we have a tattoo artist, we have moms.”

For Impaler, who helped found the team in 2006, it’s always been about a sense of community.

“It brings all these women together who wouldn’t usually be together. It’s like a family,” she said.

The Classic City Roller Girls play again on the weekend of June 18. You can find their full schedule here.
